Big Mouth Productions is an award-winning, independent documentary film production company based in New York City. Founded in 1997 to produce thought-provoking and engaging media, we’ve since become a leading creator in the independent documentary space. Our work is known for its deep integrity, highly skilled craft and ability to push boundaries, entertain and inspire.

In 2020 we produced the Sundance Film Festival Award-winning documentary DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD, directed by Kirsten Johnson and the Netflix original documentary BECOMING, which joins former first lady Michelle Obama in an intimate look at her life, hopes and connection with others as she tours with her autobiography.

In 2018, we released two feature documentaries: CHARM CITY, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and DARK MONEY, which premiered at Sundance. Both films were shortlisted for the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature and later broadcast on PBS.

In 2016, Big Mouth produced feature docs CAMERAPERSON  and TRAPPED, both of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received accolades and jury awards from festivals around the world. TRAPPED won a Peabody Award in 2017 and CAMERAPERSON won Best Feature Documentary at Cinema Eye and Sheffield Film Festival, and was on the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary.

In 2014, our film E-TEAM, about human rights investigators, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for two Emmys and was acquired as a Netflix Original. Big Mouth’s other 2014 hit, 1971, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and was nominated for a 2016 Emmy.

Our other films, which include DEADLINE and ELECTION DAY, have been theatrically distributed and broadcast on HBO, PBS, Independent Lens, NBC and Arte/ZDF amongst others. Our work has played at top film festivals around the world including Sundance, SXSW, Full Frame, Tribeca, Berlin and Sheffield.
